Whenever we are asked if we ever see deer or wild life on our property, Gene just starts to laugh because he knows what my response is going to be. “We live in a stinkin Disney Movie! We go outside and the birds sing while tying ribbons in my hair. Deer are humming to the melody and raccoons and bunnies are swaying to the music!”
I just don’t get everyone’s fascination with the wildlife. Sure they are cute when you look out the window . . . until you realize the deer have just eaten $200 in trees, the raccoons have stolen the bird feeders, and the bunnies have harvested all of your vegetables.
Yesterday, I transplanted a root bound Boston Fern into a planter to sit on my front porch. I’ve had this fern for three or four years, and it was time to give it some fresh air and outdoor recess. I sat it right next to the serene bench on the front porch. As I did my rounds of watering this morning, I opened the front door, smiled at the sun and found this:
Out in the woods somewhere, there is a bunny with serious GI issues. I know this because it was a very large fern, and if anyone ate that many leafy greens in one sitting, they would be spending a lot of time in the bathroom. I did yell out to the woods, “You missed a leaf!!!”
To add a layer of insult to this mess, as I was scooping up all the potting soil and putting it back in the pot, I was swarmed by mosquitoes and gnats despite the large volume of DEET I had applied. The fern and I were eaten alive!
