As I was walking the Cedar Valley Nature Trail today, a coyote ran out of the woods onto the path ahead of me.  I’m not sure what the coyote was thinking, but several things went through my mind as I stopped in my tracks and stared at it.

  1. The phrase “it is more afraid of you than you are of it” is incorrect.  I was fairly certain that if the coyote even leaned in my direction, a change of clothing would be required.
  2. Gene’s advice that I always walk within sight and/or hearing of civilization in case I tripped/fell/or otherwise required help was sounding like good advice.
  3. The forest was starting to resemble Jurassic Park as I glanced towards it wondering what else might lurk in there, and remembering how that turned out for everyone.
  4. And finally, I would take a photo of the coyote for evidence if I could do it one handed without tripping and proving Gene’s point in #2 above.

Fortunately, the coyote had enough excitement for the day and raced into the field, while I turned around and finished my walk going in the other direction.
